The Feldenkrais Method

Developed by Moshe Feldenkrais in the 1950’s, this Method draws on his extensive knowledge in such diverse fields as cybernetics, neuroscience, psychology, and judo. Moshe Feldenkrais was a physicist with a real flair for making abstract concepts concrete and grounding them in our physical existence.

With this idea, Moshe Feldenkrais developed a method to improve the way we move with the knowledge that this would lead to an improvement in the way we sense, think and feel.

There are two aspects in the way this method is practiced:

  1. Awareness Through Movement (ATM) – These are gentle, easy movements aimed at improving our ability to move using our whole self and increasing our awareness of how we move. These lessons are performed in a group and are verbally directed. They are suitable for everyone including people with pain, limited movement and varying degrees of inability. There is no set goal to achieve and the movements are exploratory in nature.
  2. Functional Integration (FI) – This is a hands–on, one-on–one approach in which the practitioner explores, together with the client, different possibilities of movement.

  •      A reduction in chronic pain
  •      A sense of well-being
  •      Freedom and ease of movement
  •      Self confidence
  •      A feeling of improved resilience with difficult situations
  •      Improved performance for athletes, dancers and musicians
